Placing Your Collector Car In Storage

Hey everyone, my name is Kirk. Welcome to my site about preparing your collector car for a climate controlled storage unit. After completing my first collector car rebuild, I was worried about weathering and pest damage, as those are common problems in my area. I did not want the snow, rain and sunlight to wreak havoc on the interior or exterior surfaces. I was also concerned about rats running through the engine bay and chewing up the wires. Placing the vehicle in storage was the best way to prevent these problems. My site will cover all of the tasks you need to complete before placing your car in a protective storage unit.

5 Tips for Renting a Storage Unit Before Leaving for the Peace Corps

by Leonard Bowman

If you decide to volunteer internationally long term with a program such as the Peace Corps, it is important that you spend time getting your affairs in order at home before you leave for your assignment. Since most Peace Corps assignments are at least 27 months long, you may want to look into renting a storage unit to store your belongings in so you can either rent out your home or not have to pay rent on an apartment or home that you are not using. If you have decided to rent a storage unit during your Peace Corps service, there are some general tips you should follow.

Consider a Rural Storage Center

Similar to other types of real estate, storage units in more desirable urban locations can be considerably more expensive than storage units in rural locations. Since you know you will not have to regularly access your storage unit while you are abroad, you can expand your search to include storage centers that are located further from the city you live in. However, it is important to consider the cost of moving your items to the storage unit when deciding on a location.

Consider a Long-Term Contract

Many storage centers offer month-to-month contracts as well as long-term contracts. With a long-term contract, you are likely to get a slight discount. Additionally, by signing a contract for the period of your service you will not have to worry about the rates increasing while you are abroad. While your desired storage center may offer standard yearly contracts, you should inquire whether they would be willing to create a 27 month contract for you.

Set Up Recurring Payments Before You Leave

Some Peace Corps assignments offer only sporadic Internet connections. To make sure that you can make your storage payments on time, you should set up recurring payments from a U.S.-based bank account. Alternatively, you can ask your storage center if they offer a discount for advance payments. By paying your entire storage bill before you leave, you will not have to worry about your payments being processed on time, and you may save some money.

Consider Sharing Your Unit with Other Volunteers

If you only need a small amount of storage space, you should consider reaching out to other volunteers in your group to see if they would like to share the cost of renting a unit with you. Your placement officer can let you know if there are any other volunteers in your group leaving from your area and give you their contact information. However, if you are planning to share a unit, you should discuss what will happen to the unit if one of you returns early.

Make Sure You Give Someone You Trust Access to Your Unit

It is possible that you may want something you have stored in your unit while you are volunteering abroad. To make sure someone can ship it to you, you should add someone you trust to your storage account before you leave. You may want to leave your key and access codes with this person, or you can simply add them to your rental contract in case of an emergency. If you have already left for service and forgotten to do this, you can usually add another user to your account online when you have Internet access.

While you are volunteering abroad, you will want to be able to concentrate on your volunteer work and not have to worry about your belongings back home. Selecting a secure storage unit and making sure you have properly arranged for payments ahead of time can help reduce your stress. Contact companies such as Access Self Storage to start working on finding a storage site that is right for you.
