Hey everyone, my name is Kirk. Welcome to my site about preparing your collector car for a climate controlled storage unit. After completing my first collector car rebuild, I was worried about weathering and pest damage, as those are common problems in my area. I did not want the snow, rain and sunlight to wreak havoc on the interior or exterior surfaces. I was also concerned about rats running through the engine bay and chewing up the wires. Placing the vehicle in storage was the best way to prevent these problems. My site will cover all of the tasks you need to complete before placing your car in a protective storage unit.

You have the belongings all packed up, the local moving company on the way, and the utilities on at the new place–looks like you have your big move from one place to the next pretty well under wraps. While you are focusing on getting everything to the new home, it is easy to disregard the fact that soon enough, someone else will be packing their things into the house you are leaving behind. To make sure the next resident finds the home you are leaving in sound condition, there are a few things you should do to close up shop before you lock those doors for the last time.
1.Lock up all windows and doors. - An empty house is often a target for vandals, squatters, and teens looking for a place to hang out. So make sure before you leave the house for the last time, you do a quick walkthrough and check to ensure all windows and exterior doors are locked. Don't forget to check places like the basement windows, balcony doors, and upper level windows.
2.Unplug appliances and open the fridge. - If you are leaving appliances in the house for the next resident, these too will need a little attention before you leave. Make sure all major appliances are unplugged so they are not affected by power surges when the power is shut off and turned back on for the next resident. Once you have the refrigerator cleaned out completely, unplug it and open the doors so mildew, mold, and funky odors don't develop inside.
3.Turn off the HVAC system. - There will be no need for the heating or cooling system to be running when there is no one in the home, so go ahead and turn it off. If you are moving in the dead of winter and are concerned about freezing pipes, leave the heat on the lowest temperature setting.
4. Turn off main water line to the home. - You will likely be transferring your water service from this house to the next, but it can take a few days for the water company to come to your old house and shut off the lines. Therefore, it is a good idea to shut off the main water line to the house, just to prevent any water issues while there is no one there to catch on. Once you have shut off the main valve, turn on the faucets and drain them of any residual water that may be hanging out in the lines.
